What Is Cast Iron And Types Of Cast Iron?

What is Cast-Iron?

Cast-Iron is one of the ferrous materials that does consist the carbon as its constituents. The carbon percentage will vary according to the type of material. Here, the cast-iron consists of 1.7-4.5 % of carbon in its composition. Of course, in addition to the carbon, there are different types of materials and compositions that will be engaged in it.

Type of Cast-Iron:

Different types of Cast-Iron are as follows:

  • Grey Cast-Iron
  • White Cast-Iron
  • Malleable Cast-Iron
  • Chilled Cast-Iron
  • Ductile Cast-Iron

 Advantages of Cast-Iron:

The few advantages of Cast-Iron are as follows:

  • Cast-Iron is one of the best suitable materials for the casting process.
  • Cast-Iron is tough and reliable.
  • Cast-Iron does consist of high thermal conductivity which will withstand high temperatures.
  • Cast-Iron is brittle in nature.

What are the Subjects in Mechanical Engineering?

As the Mechanical Engineering is a professional course so mechanical engineering consists of Research, designing, Fabrication, Management, and Calculation subjects. So, let us discuss about few subjects.

Engineering Mechanics:

Engineering Mechanics is the basic and most important subject that every mechanical engineering should learn. It deals with the forces and its motion of static and dynamic bodies. For example; if a force is applied on a body, then it will tend to move so in the mechanics we will study about these forces, its direction, and the motion. We read this type of theories in our school taught by our lectures or tutors.

Engineering Drawing:

Engineering Drawing is the subject where we can learn the professional drawings like scaling, projections of the shapes, symmetry drawings, etc. As a mechanical engineer we need to draft the things that are required in few fields.

Materials & Metallurgy Science:

This subject is another important and precious subject in mechanical engineering; it is all about the materials and their preparation. We can learn how a material will get into its form by heating and cooling. We can learn the compositions of chemistry in each material or metal and its applications in real fields.

Thermodynamics:

Thermo means the heat and the dynamic means the study of forces and its motions so we can say that the thermodynamics is all about studying the heat and its applications. We will learn different concepts and basic cycles that are responsible for automobile engines.

Machine Tools:

Machine tools are the cutting tools that are used in engineering purposes. As the technology is increased and required lot of operations to be done so machine tools helps us to learn about different types of cutting machines.

Thermal Engineering:

Thermal Engineering subject is the advanced learning of the thermodynamics where in thermodynamics we will learn about the concepts and basic cycles but thermal engineering is the applications of the thermodynamics where we learn about the engines, power plants, etc.

Strength of Materials:

Strength of Materials is another beautiful subject in mechanical engineering field; it is all about the materials and their behavior at different situations while force or load applied. We learn lot of basic concepts in this subject that requires for designing a material.

Design of Machine Members:

This subject is the extension of the strength of materials and teaches how a machine member or component can be designed considering number of factors. For example this subject will help us to design the bolts, nuts, springs, etc.

Theory of Machines:

Theory of Machines subject is also about the machines, their internal mechanisms, and design; we can learn the basic concepts in the mechanisms of machines and their applications. For example we can learn about the gears, gear trains, governors, etc and their designing concepts.

Automobile Engineering:

As we are much related to this word automobile, in this subject we learn about the components, their concepts, and working conditions.

Fluid Mechanics & Hydraulic Machines:

Fluid Mechanics is the study of the fluids behavior at different situations and their applications, Hydraulic Machines are the sub part where we learn about the machines that work on the fluids like water and gases.

So, these are the few and important subjects in the mechanical engineering and their related field.

What is Machine Tool and Its Basic Concepts?

 What is Machine Tool?

A Machine Tool is a type of cutting tool that uses the links, pairs, and mechanisms for its working. The main aim of the machine tool is machining (means cutting) the component according to our requirement.

So, in this post we will learn a few basics concepts use in the workshop.

This post contains:

  • What is a Machine operator?
  • What is Tool Technology?
  • What are the 7 basic types of Machine Tools?
  • Advantages of machine tool

What is a Machine operator?

A machine operator is the person (or a skilled labour) that who works on the machine tool. He will machine (means cutting) the component. A machine operator should be technically good at machine tool internal mechanism, tool technology, its usage and able to perform every task that a machine tool can.

What is Tool Technology?

The tool technology is the study of technical concepts of the tools that are used in the machines and other mechanical fields. The tools are the components that are used to machine (or cut) the components.

What are the 7 basic types of Machine Tools?

The 7 basic types of machines tools in the workshop are

  1. Lathe Machine: Lathe Machine is a type of machine tool that is used to perform the number of operations on it. A lathe machine can be used to perform Turning, Facing, Boring, Tapering, Reaming, etc. It is the most important and most usable machine tool. The lathe can be called as king or mother of all machine tools.
  2. Shaping Machine: A shaping machine is also called as shaper, it is another type of machine tool that is used to flatten the component.
  3. Planing Machine: The planing machine is also called as planer, the planer working principle is similar to the shaping machine but there will be difference between shaper and planer working procedure.
  4. Grinding Machine: The grinding machine is used to grind (smoothen) the surfaces of the materials. Of course even the shaper and planer can do this operation but the grinding machine can grind the material up to milli-meters size.
  5. Slotting Machine: The slotting machine tool is used to perform the slots on the materials.
  6. Drilling Machine: The drilling machine is used to perform the drills (holes) in the components.
  7. Milling Machine: The milling machine is used to perform the milling (or deep grooves) operation

Advantages of Machine Tool:

The advantages of machine tool are as follows:
  • We can perform number of operations easily using the different components.
  • If we talk about the lathe machine, it can perform maximum number of operations alone itself that others can.
  • A good finishing of products.
  • Machine tool can produce the products that we use in our daily life. For example, the doors we use in our houses are produced using the cutting machine, hand grinders, etc. So, like this we can say that the machine tools are responsible for our daily needs things.
These are the advantages of machine tool.
